Dean's Award for Excellence in Service to Community 2000

William A. Neal, MD

The award for lifetime achievemet in service to the state goes to Bill Neal who almost single-handedly invented outreach at the Health Sciences Center. He took his pediatric cardiology William A. Neal, MDprogram on the road long before it was fashionable, seeking out kids with heart problems. He was one of the people responsible for developing the neonatal transport system in the state and developed programs that brought about a dramatic decrease in infant mortality. He’s a good teacher and a good doctor. He has been at WVU as a faculty member since 1974 but also attended medical school here. Bill has a deep-seated sense of service to the people of the state and especially to West Virginia’s children. He has taken this commitment to the national level, advising Senator Rockefeller on children’s health issues and working on the Board of the Children’s Miracle Network, currently serving as Chairman of their Board of Trustees. A well-traveled individual, Bill has also developed a fine wine cellar.
