Pediatric Experiences

Artist render of new building

There are several ways to learn pediatric emergency medicine.  We believe that pediatric emergency medicine is best learned as an integrated experience—mirroring the practice experience of “real life” emergency medicine.

All pediatric experiences occur at the free-leaning WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital ED, attached to our main site at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital

This new facility has a 12 bed Pediatric ED and a volume of 12,000 pediatric patients per year.  It is staffed by board certified fellowship trained PEM attendings as well as board certified EM faculty from the Department of Emergency Medicine.  It is the quaternary pediatric center for the state of West Virginia and has a full complement of pediatric subspecialists, allowing you to see critically ill and medically complex children

We believe strongly in a longitudinal exposure to pediatric emergency medicine, allowing you to see the seasonal variation that is pediatrics—trauma in the spring and summer, bronchiolitis/croup in the fall and winter

Approximately 25% of all shifts in each Ruby EM month will be in the pediatric ED and PGY 1 residents have a dedicated experience introducing them to PEM in their first year as part of the PEM/EMS month

Traditionally a strength of the WVU EM residency on graduate surveys—our graduates are confident and comfortable taking care of children after graduation.
