The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) is now accepting applications for its Minority Summer Fellowship Award though February 15th, 2019. Medical students from backgrounds under-represented in medicine are eligible (and encouraged!) to apply for this award. Visit the link to learn more.

What’s Happening – Morgantown
The WVU Department of Surgery is proud to continue the tradition of the Richard A. Vaughan, MD Scholarship, which provides funding for a select number (the total number has not yet been determined, but will be based on level of interest and available funding) of medical students to attend the West Virginia Chapter Meeting of the American College of Surgeons held annually in May at The Greenbrier. This year’s dates are May 9-11th, 2019. The application process is to submit a surgical case report which will be judged by a panel of attending surgeons in a blinded fashion. See the attached flyer for further details and criteria. PLEASE NOTE - it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that all students (especially non-clinical students) seek assistance with case selection and manuscript preparation from a surgical faculty mentor. The DUE DATE for submissions is midnight on Monday, February 4th, 2019. Late submissions will not be accepted. Contact Dr. Thomay with any questions.
Remember that you will still need an updated TB test for ALL rural rotations and many off-site locations. Be sure to keep this immunization up to date!

WHITE COAT CEREMONY - Saturday, March 23 @ 2pm at the Morgantown Event Center. Send to Gina addresses for parents, spouses, etc. by Jan 18. Reply to Sheri Frankenberry by February 15 regarding your name and hometown for White Coat Program. White Coat lunch meeting will be held Jan 18 at 12pm in 1905. Rehearsal will be on Friday, March 22 @ 2pm.

WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE - We wanted to make sure you are aware of a unique MSIV elective for the World Scout Jamboree between July 20-Aug 2, 2019 in southern WV. WVU is looking for medical students who will be MSIV on July 20 to serve as supervised medical providers. This is an MSIV elective for 2 credits. A $150 stipend will be provided. Sign-up via SOLE. Congratulations to Eastern MSIII student Sarah Irvin on her engagement over holiday break to her now-fiancée, Jordan Barbina. Sarah and Jordan are from the same hometown, and are planning a May 2020 wedding. We wish them both a lifetime of happiness together!!

Karma Yoga – Wednesdays, Jan. 9th through May 1st, 5:30-6:30pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room. Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness. Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.
Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities
Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg. To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu).
Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town. 3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am. Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Help needed with setup, tear-down, cooking process, and interacting with patrons. For additional information, contact: Audreanna James, OMS-III (ajames@osteo.wvsom.edu). Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room. Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity.
