Selected Topics in Behavioral Medicine

LOCATION: Charleston Area Medical Center; Charleston, West Virginia

Objectives

This varied psychiatric experience offered through the outpatient department is of special interest to those students considering a residency in psychiatry.

  1. To provide students with an overview of adult, child, consultation/liaison, community and private practice aspects of psychiatry.
  2. To provide students with the opportunity to examine principles of psychiatric interviewing.
  3. To help patients.
  4. To acquaint students with diversity of psychopathology treatable in and outside of the hospital setting.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

  1. Observation of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in the context of outpatient clinic and consultation/liaison service at Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry Department, Shawnee Hills Community Mental Health/Mental Retardation Center, and private practice in the community.
  2. Patient interviews with staff supervision.
  3. Use of videotape equipment to examine and develop personal interviewing style.
