Family Medicine Subinternship

Objectives

To provide experience in the primary care of patients of all ages in a hospital-based setting. The student will serve as an integral part of the Family Medicine Ward Team and will participate fully in patient care.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

Each student will function as an intern under the supervision of a resident and attending physician. The student is responsible for the clinical evaluation of patients admitted to the general Family Medicine Service. Duties will include initial evaluation, writing admission orders, ordering diagnostic test and therapeutic modalities (countersigned by the resident), daily charting, coordination patient care and education the patient. The student will be expected to perform certain diagnostic procedures such as evaluating urinary sediment and gram stains, performing lumbar punctures, arterial blood gases, etc. A typical inpatient population includes adult, geriatric, pediatric and obstetrical patients.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

Daily observation, clinical evaluation by attending, attendance and participation in all assigned patient care activities and completion of assigned readings.
