Orthopedic Surgery

LOCATION: University Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, 912 Somerset Blvd., Suite 101, Charles Town, WV 25414, Berkeley Medical Center
PRECEPTOR:  Thomas Knutson, MD and Bradley Wright, MD
DURATION: 1 month
OFFERED: Continuously (limit of 4 rotations per year; must be coordinated through the Eastern Division Office of Student Services)

STATUS: This rotation fulfills a surgery elective.

Objectives

To become conversant with common orthopedic problems and skilled in evaluation and management of trauma presenting to the orthopedic service, in addition to other general orthopedic problems.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

Patient care on inpatient and outpatient basis is undertaken. The student is responsible for

  1. Examination of appropriate orthopedic patients upon admission and follow-up during the length of the selective period;
  2. Daily examination of orthopedic x-rays;
  3. Daily teaching rounds;
  4. Observation of office patients;
  5. Assisting in operating room and emergency room.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

Clinical evaluation by attending, attendance and participation in all assigned patient care activities and completion of assigned readings.
