Geriatrics
LOCATION: (inpatient) Hospice of the Panhandle, UHP Family Med, Ranson, WV 25435; (outpatient) Women's Health and Family med, 203 East 4th Street, Ranson, WV 25435

DURATION: 2 weeks minimum

Objectives
The student will understand the physiology of aging, age-determined and age-associated phenomena, inter-individual diversity of aging, function, disease presentation, and goals, and the importance of family/caregivers and the interdisciplinary team in Geriatric care. They will know and be able to implement basic principles of management for cognitive impairment, falls and mobility disorders, urinary incontinence, and other geriatric syndromes. The student will acquire experience with the following assessment instruments: the Mini-Mental Status Examination, the Geriatric Depression Scale, and a functional status survey.
Methods to Achieve Objectives
The student will work with the faculty and Geriatric Fellows to evaluate new and established patients as part of the comprehensive assessment. Topic reviews will be conducted by the faculty and fellows.
Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria
Clinical evaluation by attending, attendance and participation in all assigned patient care activities and completion of assigned readings.
