Hematology and Medical Oncology
LOCATION: Berkeley Medical center
PRECEPTOR: Matthew P. Jones and Dr. Eric Bonnem
DURATION: 1/2 month minimum
OFFERED: Continuously (limit of 4 rotations per year; must be coordinated through the Eastern Division Office of Student Services)

Objectives
To teach the student:
- Multidisciplinary care of patients with hematologic problems and cancer;
- Appreciation of pathophysiology of these disorders;
- Uses and toxicities of chemotherapeutic agents;
- Familiarity with peripheral and bone marrow morphology;
- Outpatient/Inpatient Dx and management of oncologic and hematologic problems.
Methods to Achieve Objectives
Students have responsibility for the initial evaluation and management planning of in-patient consults and for presenting them to attending physician. Close follow-up on active patients is expected; 2. Attendance at 1-3 outpatient clinics weekly; 3. Instruction in and performance of procedures; 4. Review of blood and marrow morphology with attending; 5. Selected reading assignments and presentations.
Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria
Clinical evaluation by attending, attendance and participation in all assigned patient care activities and completion of assigned readings.
