Objectives

To introduce students to responsible, rigorous clinical training of the hospital-based practice of General Internal Medicine.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

Each subintern functions as an intern under the supervision of a resident and attending physician. The subintern is responsible for clinical evaluation of patients admitted to the general medicine service. Duties include writing admission orders and orders for diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic measures (countersigned by the attending), daily chart keeping, coordinating and communicating with consultant services, and patient education. The subintern is an integral part of the Medicine Ward team and participates fully in patient care.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

Clinical evaluation by attending, attendance and participation in all assigned patient care activities and completion of assigned readings.
