Introduction to Clinical Informatics - Virtual

OVERVIEW:
During the rotation, students will gain a general understanding of clinical informatics, as well as receive an introduction to the various concepts and principles specific to the field. Students will work one on one with experts in clinical informatics from various specialties and disciplines throughout the West Virginia University Health System in order to foster an understanding of bioinformatic principles and approaches to problem solving. This rotation will primarily be a non-clinical rotation that will include various didactic experiences, readings from seminal papers and publications, discussions of the readings in a flipped classroom like style, attendance of clinical informatics meetings with preceptors, as well as additional learning experiences tailored to the individual learners needs.
Patient Care:
Analyze clinician and administrator requests for clinical decision support (CDS) and apply the 5 rights of clinical decision support (CDS) to demonstrate an understanding of these guiding principles.
Medical Knowledge:
- Evaluate how the HITECH Act, Meaningful Use, the HIPAA privacy and security rules, the Affordable Care Act, and the 21st Century Cures Act affected and rapidly accelerated the field of clinical informatics.
- Analyze clinician and administrator requests for clinical decision support (CDS) and apply the 5 rights of CDS to demonstrate an understanding of these guiding principles.
- Evaluate clinical workflows and apply the principles of EMR Usability to propose changes that would improve the usability of the tool.
Practice-Based Learning:
Identify the paths to board certification in the subspecialty of clinical informatics and explore career options following certification.
Communication Skills:
Communicates effectively with the clinical team.
Professionalism:
Demonstrate collaboration and professionalism, as evidenced by completing the rotation duties and responsibilities.
Systems-Based Practice:
Evaluate clinical workflows and apply the principles of EMR Usability to propose changes that would improve the usability of the tool.
Instructional Methods:
- Reading assignments from text book & selection of journal articles.
- Group discussion in a flipped classroom model.
- Participation in real world meetings relating to clinical informatics.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Formative Assessment:
Students will be assessed by attendance and participation in all activities of the rotation. Weekly debrief and reading discussions afford opportunity for ongoing real-time feedback on performance.
Summative Assessment:
Students will satisfactorily complete the rotation if they demonstrate comprehension of the material by participating in the assigned reading discussions.
