Brief Description

This is an emergency medical service rotation based in Berkeley County, WV, working with the members and staff of The Berkeley County Emergency Ambulance Authority. It exposes student to the first line presentation for emergent health care experiences and allows them to work with a team to provide emergency interventions and stabilization for patients in the community on their way to definitive hospital care.

Student will assess patient status and provide stabilizing intervention. Student will provide care aimed at preserving function of the acute care patient. Work with other health care professionals to provide patient-focused care.

Patient Care:

Medical Knowledge: 
Demonstrate an investigatory and analytic thinking approach. Know and apply the basic and clinically supportive sciences. Interpret the results of a patient history, and physical examination. Reason deductively to prioritize and solve clinical problems in settings of complexity and uncertainty. Know the principles of therapeutic management of disease and an understand of the risks associated with the therapy. Retrieve, manage, and critically appraise sources of medical information and research for lifelong learning.

Practice-based Learning: 
Analyze practice experience and improve practice using a systematic methodology.  Locate, appraise and assimilate evidence from scientific studies. Obtain and use information about one's own patients as well as the larger population from which patients come. Use information technology to research and manage information.

Communication Skills: 
Interact with an interdisciplinary team at Emergency Department including nurses, and doctors, as well as the EMS paramedics and emergency first responders. Be an active learner by identifying and sharing knowledge that benefits patients and the team of Health Care providers. Respect and appreciate all roles of members of an acute care patient team.

Professionalism: 
Demonstrate a commitment to ethical principles,  including provision or withholding of care. confidentiality, informed consent, and business practices. Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patients culture, age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation and disabilities. Participate as an active member of a team delivering acute patient care. Dress appropriately for the assignment, be punctual, come prepared to work.

Systems-based Practice: 
Identify clinical interventions and therapy available in the emergency setting. Complete primary assessment, evaluate of medical triage and acuity.

Instructional Methods to Achieve Objectives

Onsite learning with EMS service with directed readings as necessary (such as reviewing EKG readings) and evaluation and reframing skills will be directed by the EMS Medical Director.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

Direct Observation of skills, behaviors, and attitudes displayed , with direct and indirect feedback. 

Written clinical performance evaluation by the medical director in narrative form addressing whether student met objectives.
