Gastroenterology

Objectives

  1. To acquaint the medical student to the subspecialty of Gastroenterology;
  2. To gain familiarity with gastrointestinal fiberoptic endoscopy, both diagnostic and therapeutic;
  3. To gain familiarity with histopathology of the bowel and liver through monthly conferences with the Department of Pathology and Surgery and on daily rounds with the attending;
  4. To become familiar with esophageal motility disorders;
  5. To become familiar with gastrointestinal radiography, sonography and CT scans.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

  1. Work-up and follow all primary care patients assigned to the Gastroenterology Section, Department of Internal Medicine;
  2. See in consultation and present to the attending gastroenterologist or senior postdoctoral trainee in the Gastroenterology Section;
  3. By attending the Outpatient Gastroenterology Clinic;
  4. By attending and observing outpatient endoscopic procedures and motility studies done in an ambulatory care setting;
  5. By attending all conferences offered in Gastroenterology;
  6. Rounds in Radiology to review pertinent films, sonograms, and CT scans.

Pre-Rotation Instructions

WVU Students/Visiting Students: 4th year coordinator will email students one week prior with assignment of team and time to report.  Visiting students will first attend an Orientation before starting; you will receive an email one week prior with detailed Orientation information
