Hematology and Medical Oncology

LOCATION: Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston, West Virginia

STATUS: Elective

Objectives

To teach the student:

  1. Multidisciplinary care of patients with hematologic problems and cancer;
  2. Appreciation of pathophysiology of these disorders;
  3. Uses and toxicities of chemotherapeutic agents;
  4. Familiarity with peripheral and bone marrow morphology;
  5. Outpatient/Inpatient Dx and management of oncologic and hematologic problems.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

  1. Students have responsibility for the initial evaluation and management planning of in- patient consults and for presenting them to attending staff. Close follow-up on active patients is expected;
  2. Attendance at 1-3 outpatient clinic weekly;
  3. Instruction in and performance of bone marrow aspirations and biopsy procedures;
  4. Review of blood and marrow morphology with staff;
  5. Selected reading assignments and presentations.

Pre-Rotation Instructions

WVU Students/Visiting Students: 4th year coordinator will email students one week prior with assignment of team and time to report.  Visiting students will first attend an Orientation before starting; you will receive an email one week prior with detailed Orientation information
