Medicine Subinternship

LOCATION: Charleston Area Medical Center/ Memorial Hospital, Charleston, West Virginia

STATUS: This rotation fulfills the senior year requirement for a Subinternship

Objectives

To provide the student with the opportunity to be responsible under close supervision for the diagnostic evaluation and management of patients admitted to the general medical services. The senior student will present cases in morning report. The student has the opportunity to learn internal medicine procedures (lumbar puncture, paracentesis, thoracentesis, etc.) It is an essential rotation for those who will not see Internal Medicine after they enter residency training.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

The students will perform essentially those duties usually assigned to PGY-1 trainees. They also are expected to attend the daily scheduled departmental conferences, morning and afternoon report and be on call no more than every 4th day.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

A practical and/or oral examination may be given.

Pre-Rotation Instructions

WVU Students/Visiting Students: 4th year coordinator will email students one week prior with assignment of team and time to report.  Visiting students will first attend an Orientation before starting; you will receive an email one week prior with detailed Orientation information.
