Pediatric Allergy and Immunology

OBJECTIVES:

Gain experience on collecting, integrate useful allergy/immunology information from all patient’s sources which includes medical interviews, physical examination, and medical records.

Patient Care:

• Collect and integrate useful allergy/immunology information from all patient’s sources which includes medical interviews, physical examination, and medical records.
• Determine effective patient management plans are created as a provider of allergic and immunologic care that takes into account indications, risks, benefits and cost of therapy.
• Participate in performing and interpreting tests and procedures considered essential to the practice of allergy and clinical immunology: Allergen testing and desensitization, Patch testing, Drug hypersensitivity diagnosis and desensitization, Food hypersensitivity diagnosis, treatment and desensitization, Immediate hypersensitivity skin testing, Immune replacement or modulation therapy, Pulmonary function testing and FENO evaluation

Medical Knowledge:

• Demonstrate comprehension in their knowledge of basic/clinical allergy/immunology
• Evaluate current and past medical information and scientific evidence pertaining to allergy/immunology.

Practice-Based Learning:

• Demonstrate the ability to synthesize and apply information from the allergy/immunology and scientific literature, and to disseminate findings
• Use information technology or other available methodologies to access and manage allergy/immunology information, support patient care decisions, and enhance self-improvement 

Communication Skills:

• Communicate effectively with the patient and transmit their needs to the team • Maintain comprehensive, timely, and legible medical records

Professionalism:

• Demonstrate respect, compassion, integrity and honesty in relationships with patients, families and colleagues
• Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to gender, age, culture, religion, sexual preference, socioeconomic status, behaviors, and disabilities of patients and professional colleagues
• Maintain responsibility for his or her own emotional, physical and mental health and commitment to lifelong learning, self-assessment and reflection

Systems-Based Practice: 

• Identify and utilize the resources, providers, and systems necessary to provide optimal allergic and clinical immunologic care
• Apply evidence-based, cost-conscious strategies and risk-benefit analysis to prevention, diagnosis and allergic and clinical immunologic disease management • Work as a member of a professional team to enhance patient safety and improve patient care

METHODS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES:

Students will: - attend and engage in discussion with faculty - complete independent study and opinion/report writing activities

Formative Assessment:
Students will receive feedback addressing opinion writing and independent study activities as they progress through the elective experience

Summative Assessment: 
Students will successfully complete the elective by attending scheduled evaluations and meetings with faculty as well as by completing all assigned independent study/opinion writing activities.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Formal MS4 rotation evaluation.
