Pediatric Gastroenterology
LOCATION: WVU Physician Office Center and WVU Children's Hospital, Morgantown, WV

Medical Knowledge:
- Demonstrates knowledge of the differential diagnosis of, relative frequency of, and evaluation of common GI and liver diseases in childhood.
- Demonstrates knowledge about the indications for and complications of endoscopic and biopsy procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of special procedures such as liver elastography and capsule endoscopy and how they are used in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal disorders.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the indications and contraindications for referral of patients by primary care physicians to pediatric gastroenterologist.
Practice-Based Learning:
- Demonstrates knowledge about dietary interventions to develop personalized care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease, gastrostomy dependence, eosinophilic disease, celiac disease and fatty liver disease.
- Demonstrates knowledge about the various medication options used to treat GI conditions with their risks and benefits. Identifies the best medication option for individuals based on their co-morbid conditions
- Demonstrates shared decision making with the individual, their family and their primary care physician to develop a comprehensive personalized treatment plan that reflects their values and preferences.
Communication Skills:
- Uses empathetic and nonjudgmental language when communicating with patients.
- Communicates recommendations and treatment plans in an effective easy to understand way
- Communicates with an interdisciplinary team to formulate effective treatment plans for patients
Professionalism:
- Works collaboratively and professionally with an interdisciplinary team to prevent and treat GI diseases.
- Deals with patients and their families in a professional manner
Systems-Based Practice:
- Identifies common socioeconomic and geographic barriers to treatment in the West Virginian population, and formulates plans to alleviate these
- Identifies the role of primary care physicians, dietitians, home health nurses and infusion centers in the care of gastroenterology patients.
Methods to Achieve Objectives:
- Students will attend Pediatric GI Clinic where they will evaluate new and return patients in conjunction with the gastroenterology staff providers.
- Students will be assigned to the Pediatric GI Consultation Service where they will evaluate patients referred to the service under the supervision of the staff providers.
- Students will attend selected endoscopic procedures.
- Students will review histopathologic specimens and radiographs in the patients that they evaluate in the clinics and on the consultation service and will go over these with members of the pediatric gastroenterology staff.
- Students will be expected to present all patients to the pediatric gastroenterology staff providers, and follow and document their progress on a daily basis in the hospital.
- Students will prepare a 10-15 minute didactic presentation on a relevant pediatric GI topic of their choosing to be presented to the pediatric GI preceptor during the final week of the elective.
- During some elective periods, duties may be shared with residents or fellows who are simultaneously rotating on the service.
