Pediatric Radiology
LOCATION: WVU Children's Hospital Department of Radiology

STATUS: Elective
OBJECTIVES:
This rotation will allow students to explore the field of pediatric radiology by becoming immersed and gaining hands on experience into the medicine and patient care of pediatric radiology. Students will contribute towards the work that goes into providing high quality healthcare through radiology specifically in the pediatric population.
Patient Care:
1. Use the electronic medical record to obtain relevant clinical information regarding the exam
2. Contact referring health care provider for clarification of rationale for exam and details regarding the care of the patient
3. Discuss with patient/caretaker details of how a procedure is done and results
Medical Knowledge:
1. Select appropriate protocol for procedures and whether contrast is warranted
2. Identify various findings associated with pediatric pathologies
3. Demonstrate understanding of critical findings that must be communicated in a timely manner
Practice-Based Learning:
1. Demonstrate pediatric evaluation skills
2. Demonstrates knowledge of population and community health needs and disparities
3. Learn various techniques to read and interpret radiology imaging and official reports
Communication Skills:
1. Respectfully receives a consultation request
2. Identifies biases that hinder effective communication
3. Demonstrates clear communication with all team members
Professionalism:
1. With assistance, recognizes status of personal and professional well-being, and is aware of available resources

Systems-Based Practice:
1. Demonstrates knowledge of the mechanisms of radiation injury and the ALARA (“as low as reasonably achievable”) concept as well as Image Gently
2. Demonstrates knowledge of contrast reactions
3. Demonstrates knowledge of care coordination in pediatric radiology imaging/procedures
4. Identify how the radiology department interacts and works with various specialties in healthcare to contribute and impact patient care.
METHODS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES:
Students will: work with preceptor in the hospital, reading room, imaging rooms, and at conference sites. Engage in discussion with faculty. Complete independent study and opinion/report writing activities. There are online teaching modules available.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Formative Assessment:
Students will receive feedback regarding ability to identify findings and communicate as they progress through the elective experience.
Summative Assessment:
Students will successfully complete the elective by attending scheduled evaluations and meetings with faculty as well as by completing all assigned independent study/writing activities.
