YOGA for HSC; Aug 28 @3pm; G-278 

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY:  Earn approx. 2-3 hours Community Service by participating in an educational research study that targets HIV patient education.  Please contact Jeannette Southerly at or Carolyn Kidd for information on how to participate. 

FOLEY APPOINTMENTS Dr. Kim Foley, licensed psychologist, will be providing services again this year. You can sign up anonymously for an appointment via the SOLE Site, ‘Dr. Foley Appointments’. Reference the site for the dates/times of her schedule.

MS4 Class of 2019

As a reminder, students may begin applying to ACGME-accredited residency programs on September 5 at 9 a.m. ET. Programs are given access to applications and supporting documents on September 15, 2018 at 9 a.m. ET. All applications submitted September 5-15 will be date-stamped “September 15, 2018” for programs. 

GTR 2.0 is in full swing! Remember that you will need to send a copy of your updated CV and personal statement to your assigned Dean at least 7 days prior to your selected appointment. You will bring your GTR 1-on-1 Form (Found on the MS4 Information Page) to your appointment. 

SAVE THE DATE! GTR 3, Interviewing Skills, will be offered in 2 sessions. You may choose to attend either October 10th or October 22nd. Watch for an email in the coming weeks for more information and to RSVP. 

DECEMBER GRADUATES MD Ceremony will be held Saturday, December 15 @ 10:00am at the Coliseum. The graduation application portal is now open! You MUST apply for graduation via STAR or DegreeWorks.  Contact Amy to let Student Services know about your plans for participation in the ceremony and if you have any questions. 

MAY COMMENCEMENT DATE has been released! MD Ceremony will be held Friday, May 10 @ 7:00pm at the Creative Arts Center. Contact Amy if you have any questions. 

MS3 Class of 2020

SAVE THE DATE. Getting to Residency 0.5 will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at 4:00pm in 1901. This is your first GTR with an introduction to the match process and course scheduling for spring. 

EMERGENCY MEDICINE Interested in Emergency Medicine and/or medical education?  If so, please consider participating in an EM educational research project, which can also be counted for community service experience.  Contact Amy summers at if interested.

What’s Happening – Eastern        

THANK YOU to all of the medical students who assisted with the middle school cross-country sports physicals last week.  Approximately 130 physicals were done, which was a great service to the children of the community.  Dr. Cucuzzella and Dr. McCarthy, along with the other volunteer staff, were very appreciative of the extra help!!

PEDS Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC.  Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC.  If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend. 

Community Mini-Med School – Tues., Sept. 18th, in Eastern HSC Auditorium.  Lectures: 6:30pm, “Eastern Pylons History of Aristotle-Embryologist” presented by Dr. James Brown; 7:00pm, “Hepatitis A Update” presented by Dr. Matthew Simmons, Infectious Disease-BMC.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Volunteer Speaking Opportunity – Prostate Cancer Support Group is looking for students to speak on various prostate cancer topics for 15-20 minutes, with a potential Q&A session.  Meetings held 6:30-8:30pm on second Thursday of each month, 2nd floor of Dorothy McCormack Building.  Contact Dr. Paul Kradel, 304-267-2520, if interested. 

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu). 

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations.
