What’s Happening – Morgantown

BE AWARE Active Shooter Training will be taking place in HSC on Oct 17. There will be an increased traffic of police and EMS for role-playing in the area. Organizers have taken precautions to mitigate any loud noises or disturbances outside of the Okey Patteson auditorium in which the training will be taking place.

FALL FEST EVENT on Sunday, October 21 from 4:30-6:30pm in the Memorial Gardens. Hosted by the M2 Class, sign up to participate. Paint pumpkins for the WVU Children’s Hospital (and receive one hour of community service) and carve a pumpkin to take home. Bring your favorite fall dish or treat. Pets are welcome. 

IPE COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY Interested in a community service opportunity that targets an innovative forensic science house project? The Inter-Professional Education activity brings together medical, OT, graduate, and pharmacy students to do a standardized home assessment.  Please email Amy Summers if interested in earning community service hours for this project.

WELLNESS AND GLOBAL HEALTH elective Jan 7-20, 2019. This elective will have several days of health and wellness education follow by a 9 day trip to Quito, Ecuador visiting hospitals, orphanages, and schools. For more information, email Dr. Lorenzetti. Cost will be around $2000 ($700 for flight and $1350 for room/board/transportation). 

ARMY RESERVE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT has provided a short informational webcast for 4th year medical students who will be matching this Spring into residency programs. Student loan repayments, a monthly stipend, no active duty obligation and expectation to serve part time in the Army Reserve Medical Department after residency training.

DECEMBER GRADUATES MD Ceremony will be held Saturday, December 15 @ 10:00am at the Coliseum. The graduation application portal is now open! You MUST apply for graduation via STAR or DegreeWorks. Contact Amy to let Student Services know about your plans for participation in the ceremony and if you have any questions. 

MAY COMMENCEMENT DATE has been released! MD Ceremony will be held Friday, May 10 @ 7:00pm at the Creative Arts Center. Contact Amy if you have any questions.

MS3 Class of 2020

SAVE THE DATE. Getting to Residency 0.5 will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at 4:00pm in 1901. This is your first GTR with an introduction to the match process and course scheduling for spring. 

EMERGENCY MEDICINE Interested in Emergency Medicine and/or medical education?  If so, please consider participating in an EM educational research project, which you can count for community service experience.  Contact Amy summers  if interested.  

RESEARCH survey for Dental Hygiene students. The project focus is the knowledge other health professionals have on the responsibilities and educational requirements of dental team members. Complete the survey or direct questions to Kristen Cook or Remington Dewey

MS2 Class of 2021

Y2Q WEEK begins Oct 15th! Bring down a receipt confirming that you completed the questionnaire (the confirmation email that’s on your phone will work) and bring it to the Student Services office.  Your name will be added to the list, which we will use to draw random prizes during each day of Y2Q starting Monday, October 15.  IF we are able to get 100% compliance, the class will receive an extra $500 for wellness events! Your class is already at 60%!!

MS2 VOLUNTEERS needed to help with a gross anatomy lab, which is coordinated by Dr.Klinkhachorn and Dr. Meigh for the undergraduate students in the Dept. of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).  The structure of the lab is based on stations highlighting the anatomy of the head, neck, and torso. You will earn community service hours for your time, and Dr. Klinkhachorn can advise you as to the amount of time you can count for this lab experience. The current proposed date for this lab is MONDAY, November 5th from 1:00pm-2:00pm. If you are interested in helping, please contact Dr. Meigh.

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu). 

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations.
