Interested in learning more about Orthopedics? Attend the panel discussion: “MythBusting- dispelling common stereotypes and perceptions of orthopedic surgery.  When: October 24th at 3:00pm Where: 1905 HSC-North 

FALL FEST EVENT on Sunday, October 21 from 4:30-6:30pm in the Memorial Gardens. Hosted by the M2 Class, sign up to participate. Paint pumpkins for the WVU Children’s Hospital (and receive one hour of community service) and carve a pumpkin to take home. Bring your favorite fall dish or treat. Pets are welcome.

WELLNESS AND GLOBAL HEALTH elective Jan 7-20, 2019. This elective will have several days of health and wellness education follow by a 9 day trip to Quito, Ecuador visiting hospitals, orphanages, and schools. For more information, email Dr. Lorenzetti. Cost will be around $2000 ($700 for flight and $1350 for room/board/transportation). 

DECEMBER GRADUATES MD Ceremony will be held Saturday, December 15 @ 10:00am at the Coliseum. The graduation application portal is now open! You MUST apply for graduation via STAR or DegreeWorks. Contact Amy to let Student Services know about your plans for participation in the ceremony and if you have any questions. 

MAY COMMENCEMENT DATE has been released! MD Ceremony will be Friday, May 10 @ 7:00pm at the Creative Arts Center. Contact Amy if you have any questions.

SAVE THE DATE. Getting to Residency 0.5 will be Wednesday, November 14 at 4:00pm in 1901. This is your first GTR with an introduction to the match process and course scheduling for spring. 

EMERGENCY MEDICINE Interested in Emergency Medicine and/or medical education?  If so, please consider participating in an EM educational research project, which you can count for community service experience.  Contact Amy summers  if interested.  

RESEARCH survey for Dental Hygiene students. The project focus is the knowledge other health professionals have on the responsibilities and educational requirements of dental team members. Complete the survey or direct questions to Kristen Cook or Remington Dewey

Next Monday Starts Y2Q week! The Year Two Questionnaire (Y2Q) is now open to our second-year medical students.  Starting Monday, October 15th bring your phone, laptop or paper receipt to Student Services showing that you completed the Y2Q for the daily drawing.  We will draw daily for a prize.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunity with Project REACH (Rural Education Alliance for Community Health) at Capon Bridge Founder’s Day Festival (http://www.cometohampshire.com/event/8th-annual-capon-bridge-founders-day/) in Capon Bridge, WV.  Sept. 29th, 9:30am-mid-afternoon.  2-hour shifts available at tent engaging visitors on topics of nutrition, serving sizes, and food choices.  Practice clinical skills: blood pressure screening and motivational interviewing.  For more info or to volunteer, contact MS3 Daniel Franey (dgf0008@mix.wvu.edu). 

Volunteers Are Needed to assist with the 10th annual Freedom’s Run event, scheduled for Sat., Oct. 6th.  Event includes Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K Trail Run, and Kids’ Run.  If interested in volunteering, contact Dr. Mark Cucuzzella (cucuzzellam@wvumedicine.org) or sign up through the website (http://freedomsrun.org/Volunteer.aspx). 

Volunteer Speaking Opportunity – Prostate Cancer Support Group is looking for students to speak on various prostate cancer topics for 15-20 minutes, with a potential Q&A session.  Meetings held 6:30-8:30pm on second Thursday of each month, 2nd floor of Dorothy McCormack Building.  Contact Dr. Paul Kradel, 304-267-2520, if interested.

 Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu). 

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations.
