Metabolism and Endocrinology

Objectives

Students are taught fundamental principles of management for thyroid disease, obesity, hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus. Emphasis is placed on teaching students the importance of nutritional intervention and changes in life style in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

Students will have the responsibility for the initial work-up of new clinic patients, write all orders and carry out appropriate studies. Student will also see return patients in the metabolic clinics and see all consultations. The student will also be involved in the workup and management of selected new patient admissions.  All activities will be supervised by house officers and staff.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

Students will be evaluated on the basis of their patient presentations and follow-up. In addition students may be asked to present interesting patients or medical articles at Journal Club once a month.
