Musculoskeletal Infectious Diseases

STATUS: Elective

OBJECTIVE:

Students will demonstrate both inpatient and outpatient management plans for patients with musculoskeletal infections.

Patient Care:

Students will arrive on time for daily rounds on patients in the hospital who are being followed by the Musculoskeletal Infection Service as well as 3-4 half days of clinic at the University Town Center.

Medical Knowledge:

Students will explain both the antimicrobial and surgical management of common musculoskeletal infections including prosthetic joint infections, native septic arthritis, and hand infections.

Practice-Based Learning:

Students will demonstrate participation in multi-disciplinary discussions with orthopedic surgeons, medicine teams, nursing, and Care Management to optimize care for patients.

Communication Skills:

As part of the multi-disciplinary discussions, students will discuss and analyze cases with multiple specialties and understand the reasons why certain treatment decisions are made for particular patient circumstances.

Professionalism:

Students will demonstrate professionalism skills, including communicating appropriately with patients and their families and demonstrate collaboration skills and appropriate communication skills with a multi-disciplinary team

Systems-Based Practice: 

By seeing patients on both the inpatient and outpatient setting, students will explain the complexities of providing care for patients with musculoskeletal infections including challenges related to transportation and continuity of care

METHODS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES:

Students will be assigned their own patients to see in the hospital and will see patients in conjunction with a faculty in clinic as well. Teaching will be tailored to the student's interest as well as the particular patients being cared for on the service

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Formative Assessment:
Students will participate in didactic lectures regarding musculoskeletal infections and answer questions during each lecture.

Summative Assessment:
Students will be asked to write a paragraph about their experience as part of a team member caring for these patients.
