What does a typical day in the life of a Family Physician include?

I don't have a typical day as each day is different and unique. This is one of the beauties of the life of an Academic Family Physician. I spend about a third of my time seeing patients, a third administrating educational programs and teaching and a third doing industry sponsored clinical trials. All of these things are constantly changing.

What is the biggest challenge of being a Family Physician?

Managing the ever growing body of knowledge given the broad scope of the specialty and keeping up with the regulations and paperwork.

How do you foresee Family Practice changing over the next 20 years?

Individualized medicine utilizing interdisciplinary teams will become commonplace over the next 20 years. Evidenced based care will become easier as technology in the clinic setting becomes easier to use. It is exciting how rapidly these two aspects of Family Medicine are changing.

What advice would you give a student who is considering a Family Medicine residency?

Do it! There is no field more broad and personally rewarding over the life of a professional career than Family Practice.
