Is there a particular population of students (e.g., ethnicity, spiritual, sexual orientation) that you would particularly like to advise?

I enjoy advising all different types of students, but I feel I can impact those interested in Women’s Health and also surgical specialties the most.

What does a typical day in the life of an Obstetrician Gynecologist include?

Probably what I enjoy most about our field is the day to day diversity. We split our time between Labor and Delivery, Office patients and procedures, and the Operating room doing surgical cases. Most full-time practitioners at WVU are in the office 3 days per week, a day in the OR, and a day on Labor and Delivery, but schedules vary based on individual practices.

What is the biggest challenge of being an Ob/Gyn?

The changing environment of Obstetrics. The newer graduates are wanting more balance and patients still want continuity. I think that as the hospitalist concepts become more widely used, there will be a new model that will become the norm.

How do you foresee Ob/Gyn changing over the next 20 years?

I think that we will see more hospitalists, less small private groups, and better lifestyle for those graduating in the future.

What advice would you give a student who is considering a Ob/Gyn residency?

When you are choosing a specialty, choose what you love first and don’t make decisions based on lifestyle alone. You will be doing this for the next 30 years and you have to love it. You can choose to work less or choose a job that fits your needs, but doing something that your heart isn’t in, would be unfulfilling.
