What does a typical day in the life of an emergency physician include?
Seeing patients with wide ranges of pathology and problems, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, making diagnoses, working with a coordinated care team
What is the biggest challenge of being an emergency physician?
Having to establish trust and rapport in a matter of seconds, having a wide knowledge base, keeping current in practice, improvising care plans with sometimes limited resources
Shift work can be challenging
How do you foresee emergency medicine changing over the next 20 years?
Increased subspecialization with subspecialty departments, hopefully more research and improved resources to provide more comprehensive care to emergency patients, better preventative health services to decrease needs for emergency care
What advice would you give a student who is considering an emergency medicine residency?
Stay curious, learn as much as possible with a solid focus on developing differential diagnoses, establishing evaluation and management priorities
Practice developing an effective personal learning network
Gain as much experience as possible with procedures and ultrasound
