Is there a particular population of students (e.g., ethnicity, spiritual, sexual orientation) that you would particularly like to advise?
I am happy to help any student! As a recent new mother, I would especially love to assist parents in achieving their career goals.
What does a typical day in the life of a family medicine physician include?
I practice full spectrum family medicine, so every day is different. Sometimes I have a typical clinic schedule 8am – 5pm. During my clinics, I manage chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes, but I also see children, pregnant patients, and patients receiving treatment for addiction and gender affirming care. My clinic days also typically include procedures such as IUD and Nexplanon placements, newborn circumcisions, joint injections, skin biopsies, and more!
I also practice inpatient medicine several weeks per year. During those weeks, I work 8am to 4pm rounding on hospitalized patients then take after hours call.
Another (and probably my favorite) facet of my job is obstetrics! I work one day per week on our labor and delivery floor. I also provide continuity obstetric care so I’m often on call and ready to work anytime my patients go into labor!
What is the biggest challenge of being a family medicine physician?
Family medicine physicians need to stay up to date on such a broad range of topics since we provide care to patients of all ages.
How do you foresee family medicine changing over the next 20 years?
I think that family medicine and primary care specialties in general will become more valued over the next 20 years.
What advice would you give a student who is considering a family medicine residency?
Make sure to explore all your options within family medicine! So many times, I hear students say, “I didn’t know you could do that in family med!” There are endless possibilities of what your practice could look like!
