William W. Fleming Pharmacology Award

The William W. Fleming Pharmacology Award is given annually to a second-year medical student in recognition of outstanding achievement in Pharmacology.

This award was developed to honor the memory of William (Bill) W. Fleming, Ph.D., an extraordinary pharmacology educator and researcher who served as chair of WVU’s Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology from 1966 - 1999. Dr. Fleming earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1954 and his Ph.D in biology from Princeton University in 1957. He returned to Harvard to complete a post-doctoral fellowship in autonomic and cardiovascular pharmacology, then he joined the WVU Department of Pharmacology in 1960. During his professional career, he published over 130 full-length scientific publications and acted as advisor or co-advisor for 21 graduate students and 19 postdoctoral fellows.

Dr. Fleming’s teaching skills were legendary. He served as the course director of the Medical Pharmacology course for decades, and he received the Percival L. MacLachlan Award an unprecedented six times. This award is selected by the second-year medical students in the School of Medicine in recognition of the faculty member who demonstrates the highest degree of excellence in teaching basic medical sciences and a sincere interest in the progress of the whole class. It is in the spirit of Dr. Fleming’s dedication to medical student education that this award is presented.
